Women's Week Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To assist women residing in Monroe and Genesee counties who are returning to school after being out of school for a period of time, either to raise a family or because of work.

Deadline

April 15

Number and Size of Awards

Number of awards varies; maximum $2,500.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For mature female residents of Monroe and Genesee counties who:

  • Are returning to school after being out of school for a period of time (examples include: being out of school to raise a family, entering the workforce before completing a degree or attaining your educational goals, or needing to attend or return to school to regain economic independence or to reenter the workforce or the community);
  • Are pursuing an undergraduate degree at a college in Monroe or Genesee county on a full- or part-time basis; and
  • Have financial need.

Preference is given to women who have been active in the community, especially in activities of special relevance to women.

The committee will take into consideration academic merit and progress towards degree completion.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee of Community Foundation staff and community representatives reviews applications and selects the recipient(s).

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation mails a letter with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient. The scholarship can be applied to either the Fall semester (between July 1 and September 15) or Spring semester (between December 1 and March 15). Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient's account once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, send a class schedule or un/official transcript verifying enrollment to the Community Foundation. Scholarships not claimed by March 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

Renewability

This scholarship is not renewable; however, students may reapply each year they are eligible.

Other

Women's Week scholarships will be awarded through a variety of funds at the Community Foundation: Women's Week Fund (amount varies), Woman's Educational and Industrial Union Fund (up to three $2,500 awards), Warren H. and Maria R. Olmsted Fund (one $1,000 award), Jacqueline and Richard Archer Women's Scholarship Fund (amount varies), Finks-Bulkeley Memorial Scholarship Fund (one $500 award for a nursing student), and Sylvia Mooney Memorial Scholarship Fund (one $1,000 award).
