Gertrude M. and Donald E. Armstrong Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To provide financial assistance to a male and female student in the graduating class of the Marion School District planning to attend a school of higher learning specializing in business administration or finance.

Number and Size of Awards

One award of $2,500 to both a male and a female student.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For a male and a female student who:

  • Are outstanding students in the graduating class of the Marion Central School District;
  • Have resided in the Marion Central School District for at least three years, including the year of graduation;
  • Demonstrate financial need; and
  • Are planning to attend a school of higher learning specializing in business administration or finance.

Preference is given to students specializing in tax or tax accounting.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Marion High School Guidance Office, which reviews nominations, selects the male and female student with the highest number of nominations, and notifies the Community Foundation.

Application Process

The application process is coordinated by the Marion High School Guidance Office, where application instructions are available, if applicable.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation mails a letter with instructions for claiming the award to the high school for presentation to the recipient. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account once required documentation is received. The scholarship is payable once per academic year and can be applied to either the Fall semester (between July 1 and September 15) or Spring semester (between December 1 and March 15). Scholarships not claimed by March 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

To release the initial scholarship payment, send a class schedule or un/official transcript to the Community Foundation verifying full-time enrollment in a college or university specializing in business administration or finance. To release subsequent scholarship payments, send an un/official transcript or the Gertrude M. and Donald E. Armstrong Scholarship Renewal Form to the Community Foundation verifying continued full-time enrollment and good standing.

Renewability

This scholarship is renewable for a total of four awards in four consecutive years. Please see the Award Announcement and Payment section above for more information.
