Martin Zemel and Laura Fulton Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To provide need-based financial assistance to a RCSD graduating senior planning to pursue a degree in a STEM program at a two- or four-year college or university.

Application Period

November 1 to March 4

Number and Size of Awards

One award of $1,000; paid in one lump sum in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For a graduating senior from the Rochester City School District who:

  • Is planning to attend a two- or four- year college or university,
  • Is pursuing a STEM concentration (science, technology, engineering, or math);
  • Has a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA with a demonstrated strength in the sciences; and
  • Demonstrates financial need.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee comprised of Community Foundation staff, donors, and community representatives reviews applications and selects the recipient(s).

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.

To release the initial Fall semester payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill verifying full-time enrollment in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics program at a two- or four- year college or university to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15.

Scholarships not claimed in the assigned semester will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.

Renewability

The scholarship is a one-time award; however, students may reapply in future years and receive a maximum of four awards in four consecutive years of undergraduate education. Please see the Award Announcement and Payment section above for more information.

The founders of this scholarship believe that education can lay the foundations for a life that is both personally and economically satisfying. As educators, they do not want the lack of resources to prevent students with the potential and desire from following this route. It is therefore their desire to provide need based financial assistance to help students achieve their aspirations, one child at a time.
