Sam Urzetta Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

This scholarship was created to continue the influence of Sam Urzetta by providing scholarships for higher education to caddies, employees, and children of employees of the Country Club of Rochester.

Application Period

December 1 to July 1

Number and Size of Awards

Number of recipients and award amounts vary; paid in one lump sum in the Fall semester.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For employees, their dependent children, or caddies at the Country Club of Rochester who:

  • plan to attend a two- or four-year college, vocational/technical school, or graduate school; and
  • demonstrate financial need.

This is an Employer Related Scholarship, and eligibility is confirmed by the Country Club of Rochester.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Country Club of Rochester. A committee comprised of a Country Club of Rochester board member and community representatives reviews applications, selects the recipient(s), and informs the Community Foundation.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient. The scholarship can be applied to either the Fall semester (between July 1 and August 15) or Spring semester (between December 1 and February 15). Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient's account once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, send a class schedule or un/official transcript verifying enrollment to the Community Foundation. Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

Renewability

This scholarship is not renewable; however, students may reapply each year they are eligible.


Donor Information

The Country Club of Rochester (CCR) created this scholarship in memory of professional golfer Sam Urzetta, who was known for winning the US Amateur in 1950 before turning pro. Sam was a humble Rochester sports legend who shared his knowledge of golf with hundreds of others during his 37 years as the CCR's Head Professional from 1956 to 1993 and as a Golf Professional Emeritus from 1993 to 2010.
