Rodney B. Janes Business, Vocational, or Technical Award

Purpose of Scholarship

This need-based scholarship provides educational assistance to young adult students up to age 30 who are residents of Monroe County, NY; have financial need; and are attending or entering post-secondary business, vocational, or technical schools or programs in Monroe County.

Application Period

November 1 to March 4

Number and Size of Awards

One award of $2,000; award may not exceed cost of tuition/program/course. Award paid in one lump sum.

Allowed Use of Award

Award may be used for tuition, books, and course-related material. It may not be used for exam or certification fees or as reimbursement for course expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

For students between the ages of 16 and 30 whose permanent address is in Monroe County and who:

  • Are no more than 30 years old at the time of application;
  • Are accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited business, vocational, or technical post-secondary program in Monroe County that prepares the student for immediate entry into a career field upon completion; and
  • Meet the program’s academic, attendance, and professional standards and requirements.

Applicants do not need a high school diploma or GED to be eligible to apply.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee comprised of Community Foundation staff and community representatives reviews applications and selects the recipient(s). Recipients should be of diverse ethnic, religious, and racial backgrounds.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in April. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, upload the requested and required documentation including your class schedule, tuition bill, and the Rodney B. Janes Vocational, Technical, or Business Award Proof of Enrollment Form verifying current or upcoming enrollment to the Community Foundation’s online Consolidated Scholarship Application between July 1 and August 15.

Scholarships must be used to pre-pay for a course or pay for a course in progress and cannot be used to reimburse a recipient for a class that has already been taken or for exam or certification fees.

Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.

Renewability

This scholarship is not renewable; however, students may reapply each year they are eligible.

A former trust established this fund to benefit secondary school students and students pursuing training at business, vocational, or technical schools.
