Rochester Telecommunications Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To support local college students interested in the fields of telecommunications and technology who have a strong desire to attain an education and need financial assistance.

Application Period

December 1 to March 1

Number and Size of Awards

One award of $8,000; paid in equal annual installments over four consecutive years of undergraduate study. Award may be split between two or more recipients and is paid in the Fall semester.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For graduating seniors who:

  • Are from a public, private, or parochial school in the eight-county area surrounding Rochester (Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties);
  • Will be attending a college in the eight-county area;
  • Are pursuing an undergraduate degree in in telecommunications, computer science, information systems, network engineering, telecommunication engineering, broadcast engineering technology, information or data technology, or a related program;
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Are active in community service activities; and
  • Have financial need.

Application Process

The application process is coordinated through the Community Foundation, and this scholarship is grouped with other scholarships in our Consolidated Scholarship Application. This means that by completing this one application, you will automatically be considered for any and all other scholarships connected to the Consolidated Application.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee of Community Foundation staff and community representatives reviews applications and selects the recipients.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient. The scholarship is payable once per academic year and can be applied to either the Fall semester (between July 1 and August 15) or Spring semester (between December 1 and February 15). Payment is made to the school for the recipient's account once required documentation is received.

To release the initial scholarship payment, send a class schedule or un/official transcript to the Community Foundation verifying pursuit of a degree in telecommunications, technology, information or data technology, or a related subject at a college or university in the eight-county region. To release subsequent scholarship payments, send an un/official transcript or the Rochester Telecommunications Scholarship Renewal Form to the Community Foundation verifying continued enrollment in one of the listed programs and a minimum 2.5 GPA. Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

Renewability

This scholarship is renewable up to three times for a total of four awards in four consecutive years. Please see the Award Announcement and Payment section above for more information.

Donor Information

A Rochester-based telecommunications business created a scholarship trust with a local bank to assist employees' children with the costs of college education. After the company was acquired, the bank trust was terminated and distributed to the Community Foundation.
