Peter B. Taub Memorial Award
Purpose of Scholarship
To support high school and community college students participating in the Diversity in Multimedia Journalism Intensive, sponsored by the Democrat & Chronicle and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Selected students will be immersed in digital storytelling workshops with professionals from the D&C and RIT. Participants will receive hands-on experience in video and audio production, social media technique and strategy, writing for mobile audiences and other essential skills for today's multimedia journalists.Application Period

Number and Size of Awards
Up to eight awards of $300 each. All participants who successfully complete the program receive an award.
Allowed Use of Award
Awards may be used for educational expenses or other purposes.
Eligibility Criteria
High school juniors and seniors and community college students living in the six-county area (Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Ontario and Wayne counties) may apply. Students must be able to attend all five, full-day sessions on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus. Due to the lack of diversity in journalism, special emphasis will be placed on recruiting students of color.
Application Process
The application process is coordinated by the Democrat & Chronicle.
Students who meet eligibility requirements will need to submit:
- A letter indicating why you are interested in the Diversity in Multimedia Journalism Intensive. Be sure to include your full name, address, phone number, email, name of school and anticipated graduation date. Please let us know if you anticipate needing assistance with transportation to RIT; this information will not be used in the decision making process.
- A typed 150 to 200 word essay explaining how you have been personally impacted by an area of diversity such as race, ethnicity, culture, gender, etc.
- A letter of recommendation from a school counselor, teacher, coach or community leader who is not related to the applicant.

Committee/Selection Process
The selection process is coordinated through the Democrat & Chronicle. A committee comprised of Democrat & Chronicle staff members selects and notifies participants by March 31, 2020. Participants will have until April 15 to accept admittance in to the program. The Democrat & Chronicle will publicly announce award winners in May.
At the conclusion of the program, the Democrat & Chronicle informs the Community Foundation of the participants who have successfully completed the program.
Award Announcement and Payment
The Community Foundation issues the award directly to the recipients.
Renewability
This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.
Other
Lunch is included daily during the Intensive.
Donor Information
This scholarship was established in memory of Peter B. Taub. Peter was a writer with the Times Union, a Gannett newspaper in Rochester. Gannett Newspapers made the first gift and many others contributed in memory of this reporter whose daily column helped build a sense of community.
