Peter B. Taub Memorial Award

Purpose of Scholarship

To support high school and community college students participating in the Diversity in Multimedia Journalism Intensive, sponsored by the Democrat & Chronicle and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Selected students will be immersed in digital storytelling workshops with professionals from the D&C and RIT. Participants will receive hands-on experience in video and audio production, social media technique and strategy, writing for mobile audiences and other essential skills for today's multimedia journalists.

Application Period

December 1 to February 15

Number and Size of Awards

Up to eight awards of $300 each. All participants who successfully complete the program receive an award.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for educational expenses or other purposes.

Eligibility Criteria

High school juniors and seniors and community college students living in the six-county area (Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Ontario and Wayne counties) may apply. Students must be able to attend all five, full-day sessions on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus. Due to the lack of diversity in journalism, special emphasis will be placed on recruiting students of color.

Application Process

The application process is coordinated by the Democrat & Chronicle.

Students who meet eligibility requirements will need to submit:

  • A letter indicating why you are interested in the Diversity in Multimedia Journalism Intensive. Be sure to include your full name, address, phone number, email, name of school and anticipated graduation date. Please let us know if you anticipate needing assistance with transportation to RIT; this information will not be used in the decision making process.
  • A typed 150 to 200 word essay explaining how you have been personally impacted by an area of diversity such as race, ethnicity, culture, gender, etc.
  • A letter of recommendation from a school counselor, teacher, coach or community leader who is not related to the applicant.

Submit all materials to:
