Kathleen McElligott Hall Memorial Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To provide financial assistance to students in upstate New York State to continue their education in the field of nursing.

Application Period

December 1 to February 28

Number and Size of Awards

One award of $3,000; paid as $1,000 per year for up to three consecutive years of undergraduate study. Award paid in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For a student who:
  • Has completed at least one semester of a nursing program, and
  • Has financial need.
This award is not intended for the student with the highest GPA, but for an average student who works hard and is ambitious to excel in the nursing field.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Kathleen McElligott Hall Scholarship selection committee. The committee, comprised of two family members, an academic coordinator from Rochester Institute of Technology, and three citizens of the greater Rochester area, reviews applications, selects the recipient(s), and informs the Community Foundation.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received. To release the initial scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill verifying full-time enrollment at an accredited two- or four-year college or vocational/technical school to the Community Foundation’s online Consolidated Scholarship Application between July 1 and August 15. To release subsequent scholarship payments, upload the requested and required information including your unofficial transcript, class schedule, and tuition bill to verify continued enrollment in a nursing program and good academic standing to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15. Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.

Renewability

This scholarship is renewable up to two times for a total of three awards in three consecutive years. Award renewability varies per recipient:
  • College freshmen receive awards that are renewable for a total of three awards in three consecutive years;
  • College sophomores receive awards that are renewable for a total of two awards in two consecutive years; and
  • College juniors receive one-time awards that are not renewable.

Donor Information

This scholarship was established as a tribute to Kathy after her untimely death from cancer at the age of 50. A graduate of Mercy High School, Kathy went on receive a degree in nursing. She was a member of the Legal Nurses Association, employed by the New York State Health Department, and provided medical consultations to many local attorneys. In addition to being an excellent nurse, Kathy was a devoted wife and mother, and a true friend to all who knew her. To learn more about Kathy, click here.
