John H. Berman Memorial Award
Purpose of Scholarship
To provide financial assistance to graduating seniors at the University of Rochester who are planning to attend law school.

Number and Size of Awards
One award of $6,000; may be split between two or more recipients. Award paid in one lump sum in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters. Minimum award $1,000.
Allowed Use of Award
Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with law school
Eligibility Criteria
For an outstanding graduating University of Rochester senior who:
- Plans to attend law school, and
- Based on the recommendations of professors, best demonstrate the self-motivation, achievement, leadership, concern for others, reliability, and commitment to high moral principles that were evident in the life of John H. Berman.
Application Process
The application process is coordinated by the University of Rochester Career Center, where application instructions are available, if applicable.
Committee/Selection Process
The selection process is coordinated through the University of Rochester Career Center. A committee comprised of two attorneys from Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP and three representatives of the University of Rochester reviews nominations before the end of March and interviews finalists in early April. The Community Foundation is notified once the recipient is selected.
Award Announcement and Payment
The Community Foundation emails a certificate to the University of Rochester Career Center for presentation to the recipient and emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.
To release the scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill verifying full-time enrollment to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Acceptance and Renewal Form between July 1 and August 15.
Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.
Renewability
This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.
Donor Information
This scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of John H. Berman, an alumnus of the University of Rochester and an attorney with the law firm of Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP. His legal career spanned 55 years.
