James Vernard Leenhouts Memorial Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To provide support for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with post-secondary education for graduating seniors from Marion Junior-Senior High School.

Application Period

December 1 – February 28

Number and Size of Awards

One award of $7,000; paid as $1,750 per year for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate study. Award paid in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For a graduating senior at Marion Junior-Senior High School who:

  • Has been accepted into a post-secondary education program such as an accredited undergraduate, vocational, or technical post-secondary institution;
  • Has a cumulative GPA 2.5 or higher;
  • Has financial need; and
  • Understands and can express the hazards of both impaired (under the influence of alcohol or drugs) and distracted driving.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee comprised of Community Foundation, community, and family representatives reviews applications and selects recipient(s).

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.

To release the initial scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill verifying enrollment to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15.

To release subsequent scholarship payments, upload the requested and required information including your unofficial transcript, class schedule and tuition bill to verify continued enrollment and good standing to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15.

Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.

Renewability

This scholarship is renewable up to three times for a total of four awards in four consecutive years. Please see the Award Announcement and Payment section above for more information.


Donor Information

James Vernard Leenhouts was born June 21, 1951. He lived with his parents (Mildred and Vernard Leenhouts) and his older sister (Joan) at 3821 Union Street, Marion, NY. He attended the Marion Central School, was a boy scout, loved to ski, played the trombone had a large circle of friends, and enjoyed causing minor disturbances in the classroom. As a junior in high school, he was looking forward to pursuing a career as a chemistry teacher. On Memorial Day 1968, after an evening gathering with his friends at Pulcini’s Pizza on Main Street in Marion, he was offered a ride home by friend. An accident occurred involving another car. Jim later died due to his injuries received from the accident. The Leenhouts family was changed forever. Mrs. Leenhouts expressed a desire that her sons memory be perpetuated which continues to be the purpose of this scholarship.
