Jacqueline Hall Minet Travel Award for Cross-Cultural Understanding

Purpose of Scholarship

To provide financial assistance to a Brighton High School student or a Rochester City School District high school student so that he or she can participate in a travel experience that offers significant opportunities for involvement in a foreign-language culture.

Application Period

November 1 to March 4

Number and Size of Awards

Number of recipients and award amounts vary; maximum $2,000.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for expenses associated with travel abroad programs.

Eligibility Criteria

For a student attending Brighton High School or a Rochester City School District high school who:

  • Is entering his/her junior or senior year;
  • Maintains a B or better average;
  • Has the foreign language skills needed by the travel abroad program;
  • Demonstrates cross-cultural interests in and out of school;
  • Is accepted into a travel abroad program with home-stay or local culture immersion opportunities; and
  • Has financial need.

Preference may be given to a student visiting a Spanish-speaking country.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee comprised of Community Foundation staff and community representatives reviews applications and selects recipient(s).

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in April. Payment is mailed to the school or sponsoring organization once required documentation is received. Upload requested and required information to the Jacqueline Hall-Minet Travel Award for Cross-Cultural Understandings application between July 1 and August 15.

Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.

Renewability

This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.

Travel abroad programs include high school programs OR independently run programs. Examples of such programs include Cross Cultural Solutions (www.CrossCulturalSolutions.org), Two Worlds United (www.TwoWorldsUnited.org), and Nacel (www.nacel.org).


Donor Information

This scholarship award was established in 2007 in memory of Jacqueline Hall Minet, a vibrant and beloved member of the Brighton High School class of 1977, who died in March 2006. She had a long-standing love of foreign language and cross-cultural humanitarian endeavors. Her career benefited greatly from early opportunities for home stay and study in foreign language settings.
