Purpose of Scholarship

To support the Junior Literary Awards of the Friends & Foundation of Rochester Public Library.

Application Period

November 1 to Early January

Number and Size of Awards

Awards are provided in three categories:

  • Poetry: First Place $300, Second Place $200, Third Place $100;
  • Prose: First Place $300, Second Place $200, Third Place $100; and
  • Performance: First Place $300.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for educational and other expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

For Monroe County high school students who participate in the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library's Sokol High School Literary Awards Creative Writing Contest.

Application Process

The application process is coordinated by Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library. Learn more about this award, register, and enter a submission at https://ffrpl.libraryweb.org/programs/sokol-awards/.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library, which recruits judges (who are writers, authors, and teachers), selects winners, and informs the Community Foundation.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation issues checks payable to the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library for distribution in May.

Renewability

This scholarship is not renewable; however, students may reapply each year they are eligible.


Donor Information

This scholarship was established in 1985 by Eli Sokol, a trustee of the Friends of the Rochester Public Library, and his wife, Mildred Sokol, both of whom were long-time supporters of the creative writing contests started by the Friends in 1958.
