Purpose of Scholarship

To provide a loan repayment award to a University of Rochester or Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) medical school graduate who has matched in a surgical residency in the metro-Rochester area. ***Not offered every year. Next award 2024.***

Award amount varies; paid in the Fall. Average award $4,000 to $8,000. ***Not offered every year. Next award 2024.***

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may only be used to repay medical school loans held by recognized lending institutions such as federally insured banks and credit unions.

Eligibility Criteria

For graduating University of Rochester or Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) medical school students who:

  • Have matched in a surgical residency in the metro-Rochester area;
  • Have demonstrated scholastic ability; and
  • Have demonstrated financial need.

Application Process

The application process is coordinated by the Medical Scholarship Fund Committee of the Monroe County Medical Society. Information and application forms are available at www.mcms.org/Scholarships.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Medical Scholarship Fund Committee of the Monroe County Medical Society. A committee comprised of members of the medical profession (doctors and physicians), and members of the community (approximately 20 members total) reviews applications, selects the recipient, and informs the Community Foundation.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is made to the loan provider for the recipient’s account once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information and the Edward T. Mulligan, MD Memorial Award Loan Repayment Form to the Community Foundation. The Foundation will send a check to the lending institution(s) to be applied toward the award recipient’s outstanding loan amount. NOTE: Although the scholarship payout may be divided among multiple lending institutions, the scholarship can only be paid as a single payment lump sum to each institution.

Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.

Renewability

This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.


Donor Information

Edward T. Mulligan, MD was a revered Rochester surgeon whose career was shortened by his untimely death in 1975. The award is endowed by the Mulligan Family.
