Derek Hill Memorial Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

This scholarship is given annually to a student who is completing his or her senior year in the SUNY Brockport Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and plans to attend graduate school for chemistry or biochemistry or a school of medicine or pharmacy.

Number and Size of Awards

One award of $2,000; paid in one lump sum in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, books, fees, and other graduate level educational expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

For a graduating SUNY Brockport student who:

  • Is completing his/her senior year in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and continuing on to graduate school for chemistry or biochemistry or a school of medicine or pharmacy;
  • Has a distinguished record of accomplishment in academics and/or research; and
  • Has an overall GPA of 3.3 or better.

Application Process

The application process is coordinated by the SUNY Brockport Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, where application instructions are available if applicable.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the SUNY Brockport Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Members of the department’s faculty and staff review applications, select the recipient, and inform the Community Foundation.

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill to verify enrollment in a graduate school for chemistry or biochemistry or a school of medicine or pharmacy to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15.

Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.

Renewability

This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.


Donor Information

Derek Hill received his Ph. D. in physical chemistry from Imperial College, London. He started his academic appointment as a professor of chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1958. From 1961 through 1968, Derek was a professor of chemistry at the University of Hong Kong. He then moved to SUNY Brockport in 1968 and continued until his retirement in 1988. Derek was chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1969 until 1979 and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1979 to 1984.
