The Barbara Berger Clark Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Purpose of Scholarship
The family of Barbara Berger Clark created this scholarship in her memory to support the next generation of nurses who share her commitment to public health and to serving their communities. Open to all nursing students, including those entering the field later in life or as a second career, this scholarship especially honors those who share Barbara’s commitment to public health nursing, prevention, and advancing health equity.
Application Period
December 1 to February 28
Number and Size of Awards
Number of recipients and individual total award amounts vary annually. Award paid in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters. Award renewability varies and is dependent on the length of the recipient’s program of study. Minimum award size $5,000.
Allowed Use of Award
Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.
Eligibility Criteria
For students who:
- Have been accepted into a nursing program at an accredited undergraduate, vocational, or technical post-secondary institution,
- Reside in the eight-county area surrounding Rochester (Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties) and;
- Have financial need.

Committee/Selection Process
The selection process is coordinated through Rochester Area Community Foundation. A committee comprised of Community Foundation staff, community members, and family representatives reviews applications and selects recipient(s).
Award Announcement and Payment
The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is made to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall with a request to split the amount between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.
To release the initial scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill verifying enrollment in a nursing program at a two- or four-year college or university to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15.
To release subsequent scholarship payments, upload the requested and required information including your unofficial transcript, class schedule and tuition bill verifying continued enrollment in a nursing program at a two- or four-year college or university to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15.
Scholarships not claimed by October 15 in the assigned academic year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.
Renewability
Award renewability varies and is dependent on the length of the recipient’s program of study.

Barbara Berger Clark devoted her life to caring for others — as a public health nurse, a compassionate volunteer, and a lifelong advocate for the community’s most underserved, vulnerable, and needing a helping hand. Through this award, Barbara’s legacy lives on in those who choose to serve beyond the bedside — bringing care, compassion, and opportunity to individuals and communities who need it most.
