Taking Charge of Change from Within
November 13, 2024The Case for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Becoming more diverse, equitable, and inclusive as an organization is the right thing to do. In addition, this work is necessary to care for our employees, foster innovation, make better decisions, and keep our organization relevant with changing times.
We started on this path over a decade ago, but hitting a plateau wasn’t an option.
Recent DEI Program Highlights
- We established our first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion staff position;
- We worked with a consultant on a yearlong process of discovery, vulnerability, and growth;
- An audit of our practices, policies, and approaches set down a roadmap for the work ahead;
- Staff developed a “toolshed” with resources to guide us on our way;
- Identity-based employee groups were formed to offer safe spaces for learning and sharing; and
- Anti-racist book clubs met for deep and empathetic discussions.
Teresa Stewart, diversity, equity and inclusion associate, says she’s seen a noticeable shift in the culture of both staff and the board. “I’m really proud of the employee resource groups and the DEI committee. I can look at them and see we’re making tangible progress,” she says.
