
Barry Kaplan Accounting Scholarship
Purpose of Scholarship
To provide scholarship assistance to a Syracuse University junior or senior from the greater Rochester area who is pursuing a degree in Accounting.

Number and Size of Awards
One award of $2,000 each to an upcoming Senior an upcoming Junior. Senior award paid in one lump sum and Junior award paid as $2,000 per year for up to two consecutive years of undergraduate study. Award paid in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters
Allowed Use of Award
Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other educational expenses at Syracuse University.
Eligibility Criteria
For a student who will be attending Syracuse University full-time during his/her junior or senior year and who:
- Is from the eight-county area surrounding Rochester (Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties);
- Is pursuing a bachelor's degree in accounting;
- Has a 3.0 overall GPA; and
- Has financial need.
Application Process
The application process is coordinated by Office of Scholarship Programs at Syracuse University, where application instructions are available for eligible students.
Committee/Selection Process
The selection process is coordinated through the Office of Scholarship Programs at Syracuse University. The department reviews applications, selects the recipient(s), and informs the Community Foundation.
Award Announcement and Payment
The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in the Spring. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.
To release the initial scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill verifying enrollment in an accounting program to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Acceptance and Renewal Form between July 1 and August 15.
To release subsequent scholarship payments, upload the requested and required information including your unofficial transcript, class schedule, tuition bill, and the Barry Kaplan Accounting Scholarship Renewal Form verifying continued enrollment in an accounting program to the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Acceptance and Renewal Form between July 1 and August 15.
Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited. Email scholarships@racf.org with any questions or concerns.
Renewability
Students receiving the initial award during their junior year may renew this award once for a total of two awards in two consecutive years. Students receiving the initial award during their senior year are not eligible to renew. Please see the Award Announcement and Payment section above for more information.
Donor Information
Barry was a good and honorable man who loved his family, was loyal to his friends and partners, and was a trusted advisor to countless individuals. A man who loved his work, Barry made friends of his clients and clients of his friends. He was an avid Syracuse University sports fan, and he approached all aspects of his life with a fun-loving, competitive spirit. Barry took great pride in being a mentor to young people starting out in their careers. He always took an interest in all of the young people who were interns, talking to them about their careers, taking them out to lunch, and helping them find their area of expertise and place in the firm. Barry was trusted by all, and he will be missed, but never forgotten.
