John H. Berman Memorial Award

Purpose of Scholarship

To provide financial assistance to graduating seniors at the University of Rochester who are planning to attend law school.

For expenses associated with law school or other purposes

Eligibility Criteria

This award is made to outstanding graduating seniors from the University of Rochester who:

  • Plan to attend law school, and
  • Based on the recommendations of professors, best demonstrate the self-motivation, achievement, leadership, concern for others, reliability, and commitment to high moral principles that were evident in the life of John H. Berman.

Application Process

The application process is coordinated by the University of Rochester Career Center, where application instructions are available, if applicable.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the University of Rochester Career Center. A committee comprised of two attorneys from Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP and three representatives of the University of Rochester reviews nominations before the end of March and interviews finalists in early April. The Community Foundation is notified once the recipient is selected.

Award Announcement and Payment

An award letter with instructions to claim the award is sent to the University of Rochester Career Center to be presented at the University of Rochester graduation. The scholarship can be applied to either the Fall semester (between July 1 and October 15) or Spring semester (between December 1 and March 15). Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient's account once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, send a class schedule or un/official transcript verifying full-time enrollment to the Community Foundation. Scholarships not claimed by March 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

Renewability

This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.


Donor Information

This scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of John H. Berman, an alumnus of the University of Rochester and an attorney with the law firm of Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP. His legal career spanned 55 years.
