James R. Moran Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To provide scholarship support to the education of and cultivate future LGBTQ leaders.

Deadline

Number and Size of Awards

Number of awards and amounts vary; minimum award $1,000.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For students who identify as members of the LGBTQ community and:

  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA (B average) or higher;
  • Are pursuing post-secondary education at a qualifying academic institution* in the eight-county area surrounding Rochester (Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties); and
  • Demonstrate a proclivity for social justice activism and/or a desire to positively impact the LGBTQ community.

*Qualifying institutions include accredited undergraduate or graduate colleges, universities, community colleges, trade schools, and technical schools.

Members of the Out Alliance (formerly the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley) board or the scholarship selection committee or their partners or child(ren) are not eligible for this scholarship.

Note: The Rochester LGBTQ, Susan A. Cowell, and James R. Moran scholarships share a single application. Applying for one automatically submits an application for each.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Out Alliance (formerly the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley). A committee with representatives from the Community Foundation, LGBTQ community, and Out Alliance reviews applications and selects the recipient(s).

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation mails a letter with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient. The scholarship can be applied to either the Fall semester (between July 1 and September 15) or Spring semester (between December 1 and March 15). Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient's account once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, send a class schedule or un/official transcript verifying enrollment to the Community Foundation. Scholarships not claimed by March 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

Renewability

This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.

Other

Applicants/Awardees may be asked to meet with a selection committee designee for evaluation and to learn of additional leadership development opportunities, including mentoring, internships, and tuition for conferences.

Awardees may be asked to attend a community recognition event.

This scholarship was created by a retired teacher and LGBTQ advocate to support and cultivate future LGBTQ leaders.
