William Jackson Hawley Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

To help a student whose parent has recently died from cancer — or who is undergoing cancer treatment — remain in school and obtain a bachelor's degree. This need-based scholarship provides support when family finances experience a drastic change due to medical bills or reduced income as a result of cancer.

Deadline

April 15

Number and Size of Awards

Number of awards and amounts vary; minimum award $1,000.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For a student residing in Monroe County who:

  • Is attending college full-time in Monroe County or graduating from a Monroe County high school and continuing on to college;
  • Has a GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0; and
  • Has financial need as a result of a parent's battle with cancer.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee comprised of Community Foundation staff and community representatives reviews applications and selects the recipient(s).

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation mails a letter with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient. The scholarship can be applied to either the Fall semester (between July 1 and September 15) or Spring semester (between December 1 and March 15). Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient's account once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, send a class schedule or un/official transcript verifying enrollment to the Community Foundation. Scholarships not claimed by March 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

Renewability

This scholarship is not renewable; however, students may reapply each year they are eligible.
