Arts and Culture
Every year outstanding high school poets and fiction writers are recognized by the Friends of the Rochester Library. The awards carry a small cash stipend, thanks to Eli and Mildred Sokol of Pittsford. The Sokols created a permanent endowment fund at Rochester Area Community Foundation to recognize literary excellence through the generations.

Smaller arts groups find it challenging to run a nonprofit organization while creating their art. Our Community Arts Grants help groups manage their operations better. Grants go to develop new audiences, build better boards, plan strategically and acquire technology. The Arts and Cultural Council of Greater Rochester administers these grants on behalf of the Community Foundation. |
Another path to stronger arts organizations lies in permanent endowment funds. These provide a stream of continuing revenue and a vehicle for major gifts and bequests. Our Arts Tomorrow program built endowments for Garth Fagan Dance, Geva Theatre Center and the RPO. Historic Palmyra and Young Audiences also have endowment funds with the Community Foundation.

Many charitable individuals have remembered the arts through the Community Foundation. Anne McQuay, the “mayor of Gibbs Street,” supported music and dance groups. Lloyd E. Klos continued his passion for historic preservation. John and Emily Castle favored music education. The Joan and Harold Feinbloom Supporting Foundation assists arts as part of children’s development.
