Aging

Roxanne Marshall (shown) worked as a Brighton Middle School librarian for 30 years.  The daughter of a Batavia, NY businessman and banker, Roxanne cared for her elderly mother Muriel in later years.  This experience convinced her to create the Muriel Marshall Fund for the Aging through her will.  Marshall Fund grants help Genesee County seniors remain vital and independent.

Finding Resources
Aging can be a time of wisdom and satisfaction, if needed supports are in place. Seniors and their families find information and resources through ElderSource, a joint program of LIFEspan and Catholic Family Center. Our John F. Wegman Fund, a former private foundation, provided support for this and many other specialized programs for seniors.

Maintaining Mobility
Just getting out of the house can be a challenge for seniors. Our public-private partnership with Genesee County Office for the Aging helps seniors shop, see the doctor, and visit friends. Muriel Marshall Fund grants pay for route scheduling, door-through-door assistance for frail seniors, and other senior-friendly transportation.

Respite for Caregivers
Rochester faces major shortages in health care workers, including nurses. Families and volunteers often serve as caregivers, particularly at the end of life. After his wife passed away from cancer, Community Foundation donor Joe E. Brown created a fund to provide training for hospice volunteers.
