4 Nonprofits Win $5,000 Prizes

Rochester Area Community Foundation has awarded $5,000 prizes to four local nonprofits that garnered the most unique donors during ROC the Day, our community’s successful 24-hour online day of giving on December 8.

The Community Foundation prizes in four specific categories were intended to encourage nonprofits in the nine-county greater Rochester region to get the word out about ROC the Day by encouraging their supporters to participate. Nonprofits that registered in the following categories were eligible: Arts & Culture, Community Betterment and Economic Development, Environment, and Human Services.

Winners of the prizes attracted the most unique donors, which meant that multiple gifts from one donor to one organization were counted only once. The award recipients are:

“The goal of our prizes was twofold,” said Jennifer Leonard, president and executive director of Rochester Area Community Foundation. “We wanted to promote this unprecedented day of giving organized by our valued community partner, United Way of Greater Rochester. We also wanted participating nonprofits to see the wonderful possibilities that this unique approach to year-end giving could have for them.”

Overall, ROC the Day received $564,970 from 6,600 donors during the 24-hour time period in which donations could be made.

"We were thrilled to be able to work with the Community Foundation to further enhance ROC the Day," said United Way President Peter Carpino. "These four prizes encouraged participation and excitement, both crucial to the success of this first ever community-wide event."

Thanks to the United Way of Greater Rochester for coordinating this collaborative community giving event. ESL Federal Credit Union was the key event sponsor. In addition to Rochester Area Community Foundation, other community partners in this effort are the Ad Council of Rochester, Association of Fundraising Professionals, City of Rochester, Council of Agency Executives, County of Monroe, The Farash Foundation, Greater Rochester Health Foundation, The Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester and the RocCity Coalition.
