Foundation Awards $389,336 in Grants

Rochester, NY — Rochester Area Community Foundation is awarding 54 grants totaling $389,336 to organizations and programs in the areas of arts and culture, environment, health, historical preservation, women and girls, and more.

Grant amounts range from $769 to enhance visual arts opportunities at School of the Arts to $28,500 to design an urban agricultural plan in southwest Rochester.

This round of competitive grants, one of the Community Foundation’s largest, drew 98 proposals seeking more than $1 million in funding.

“Local philanthropists have made possible every one of these grants, which are especially needed by organizations in today’s still-difficult climate,” says Jennifer Leonard, president and executive director of the Community Foundation.

Here are the details on the grant recipients and their programs:

ARTS & CULTURE ($30,826*)

Baobab Cultural Center: To upgrade the organization’s space to allow for performances to be held in their facilities.  $2,000

Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester: To provide hands-on opportunities for children to make music. $3,000

Friends of School of the Arts: To enhance the visual arts opportunities available to students. $769

Gateways Music Festival: For the biennial festival of classical music with musicians of African descent. $2,573

Genesee Valley Orchestra and Chorus: To provide three concerts to the community.  Performances will incorporate both orchestral and choral elements. $1,986

Hochstein School of Music and Dance: To support the Honors Ensemble Program where students in grades 9 through 12 are trained by professional musicians and perform at local events.  $5,000

Pegasus Early Music: To bring guest artists to perform a concert. $2,000

PUSH Physical Theatre: To develop a theatre piece that will explore the dynamics of human interactions that lead to conflict. $1,000

Rochester Children’s Theatre: To bring literature- and curriculum-based theatrical productions into area schools. $2,000

Rochester City Ballet: To add a new ballet to their collection of contemporary dance pieces. $2,500

Rochester Contemporary: For program support and to expand this arts center’s reach in the community. $2,498

Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra: To bring the orchestra into direct contact with the community at outreach concerts. $3,000

Young Audiences of Rochester: To expose students to a wide range of arts and diverse cultural experiences. $2,500

ENVIRONMENT ($56,720**)

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orleans County: To purchase a livestock scale for use by the 4-H Club. $2,400

Cracker Box Palace: To enhance their animal rescue mission and to preserve a scenic and historic landscape. $5,000

EquiCenter: To purchase three covered hay feeding stations for therapy horses. $5,000

Genesee Valley Conservancy: For a bus excursion to Livingston County farms and for educational presentations designed to create a more open dialog between policy makers and farmers.  $1,820

Heritage Christian Services: For a saddle and fitting services for therapeutic riding horses.  $4,000

Humane Society at Lollypop Farm: To help save farm animals from cruelty, neglect, or slaughter while providing humane educational experiences for area families. $5,000

Rochester Roots: To design an urban agricultural plan in the southwest part of Rochester. $28,500

Seneca Park Zoo Society: For a representative Maasai Village and livestock enclosure. $5,000

HEALTH ($75,868***)

American Diabetes Association: For scholarships at a residential camp for children with diabetes.  $5,000

American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes: To reduce the transmission of infections in settings such as day care centers, elementary schools, and hospitals. $5,000

Arthritis Foundation, Upstate New York Chapter: For people with arthritis to better manage their disease.  $5,000

Catholic Charities of Livingston County: For Faith in Action, to help people who may be isolated and living with chronic health conditions or disabilities.  $5,000

Catholic Charities of Livingston County: For Mentor Moms, to assist at-risk pregnant women with transportation to medical appointments and to create supportive relationships for the women.  $5,000

CP Rochester: To help overcome the challenges resulting from acquired disabilities so that individuals with these conditions may remain independent and safe in their homes. 
$5,000

CURE Childhood Cancer: To help children with cancer achieve academic success despite their diagnosis. $5,000

Heritage Christian Services: For people with development disabilities who also have financial need to participate in therapeutic horseback riding. $4,000

Lakeside Health System: To increase awareness of diabetes and the role of nutrition and exercise in promoting healthy living. $3,368

Lifetime Care: To address the gaps between the health status of minorities and non-minorities. $5,000

National Alliance on Mental Illness Rochester: To provide support, education, advocacy, and “community” for people 16-25 years of age who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness.  $3,500

Pluta Cancer Center: To provide families with support for their day-to-day living expenses.  $10,000

Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center: To improve access to mental health care for uninsured and underinsured individuals. $5,000

St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center: To provide last-resort emergency assistance for individuals and families facing loss of housing or utility shut-off. $10,000

HISTORICAL PRESERVATION  ($168,922)

Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society: To restore the exterior of the Keeper’s House. $20,000

City of Rochester, Department of Environmental Services: To design and install way-finding elements to assist visitors in locating the graves of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. $15,000

Clarkson Historical Society: For restoration of the Clarkson Academy, an 1853 school building. $12,000

Corn Hill Navigation: To support the Erie Canal field studies program for Rochester City School District 4th grade students. $20,000

Finger Lakes Cultural & Natural History Museum: For first-year museum’s start-up expenses. $15,000

Friends of Ganondagan: For a historically accurate re-enactment of early contact between Seneca people and Europeans. $14,422

Genesee Country Village & Museum: To allow more participatory activities for visitors of all ages. $20,000

Kentucky’s Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ Project: For operating support.  This organization received support from Lloyd E. Klos while he was living and will receive a grant of $5,000 every other year.  Seashore Trolley Museum, also an organization Mr. Klos supported while living, will receive a grant of $5,000 in alternate years. $5,000

Landmark Society of Western New York: To complete a condition report for the oldest building in Monroe County, the Stone-Tolan House (circa 1792) and for the 1880s Tolan Barn. $15,000

Rochester Historical Society: To complete a history of Rochester people who served in World War I. $10,500

Rundel Library Foundation: To preserve two oral history collections recorded between 1970 and 2009. $10,000

South Wedge Planning Committee: For a building survey of residential and commercial sections of the neighborhood to identify justifiable boundaries of the potential historic district. $12,000

WOMEN & GIRLS ($43,000****)

Catholic Family Center: To provide employment training, work experience, and support services to women in recovery from drug abuse. $10,000

Girl Scouts of Western New York: For an after-school scouting program for girls living in subsidized housing. $6,500

Safe Journey: For counseling and support services for suburban women who are victims of domestic violence. $10,000

Spiritus Christi Prison Outreach: To provide safe, stable housing to women leaving jail and to reunite children and mothers in a supportive environment. $10,000

University of Rochester:  To support an after-school program for urban middle school girls where the students conduct science experiments of their choosing. $6,500

OTHER ($14,000)

Chorus America: To help chorus leaders gain effective management skills. $10,000

Greater Rochester After-School Alliance: To hire a consultant who will address the future of GRASA on the eve of its 10th anniversary.  $4,000
